The St. Catharines Falcons Junior B squad just got a little more talented.

The Falcons signed Matthew Paton from the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League Monday.

"Our expectations are to compete at a high level and for a championship, that's the philosophy," said Falcons president Jim Goldwin. "We're hoping he's going to be able to play with (Riley) Sheahan."

A Junior B dynamo, Sheahan has hit his stride with nine goals and 26 points in his last 10 games. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Paton should fit nicely on Sheahan's wing, according to the coaching staff.

The native of Woodstock made his OHL debut at the Gatorade Garden City Complex Jack Gatecliff Arena against the Niagara IceDogs last season. He's tallied only one assist in 16 OHL games with the Erie Otters this season. Paton was selected in the seventh round (121st overall) by the Otters in the 2007 OHL Priority Selection.

Before that he scored 22 goals and registered 70 points in 69 games for the Cambridge Winter Hawks.

Paton is expected to make his second debut at the Jack when the Falcons host Port Colborne this Friday. He is currently playing through a finger injury.

Recently, St. Catharines took control of the Golden Horseshoe Conference of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League after winning two and losing one on the road last week.

"The season is going pretty good based on where we are right now," said Goldwin. "They're working hard, but we have to remember it's only November."

The Falcons lost 4-2 to the Wheatfield Blades on the road last Thursday, despite unleashing a flurry of shots on the Blades' net.

St. Catharines outshot the American club 51-24, keeping Blades goaltender Daniel Ramirez on his toes all night. Wheatfield was on the board first in the opening period and shortly followed up with a power-play goal. St. Catharines' Adam Montgomery managed to beat Ramirez on a play from Andrew Kilcar and Miles Torch. Wheatfield scored two more in the second to make it 4-1. Montgomery potted his second goal of the game on the powerplay from Riley Sheahan and Adam Moroney. Tim Egloff suffered the loss in net.

The next night, St. Catharines trounced the Welland Jr. Canadians 7-2. It was the Falcons' powerplay (4-for-8) that came through. St. Catharines got on the board first with a power-play marker from Torch on a pass from Dylan McInnis. Welland and Zack Belcastro answered right back on a powerplay of their own. Jr. Canadians forward Steve Yendt tallied a goal before the period was over but that was all Falcons goaltender Jeff Sinclair would give up. The Falcons roared out of the gate in the second, scoring four goals by Torch and Montgomery, both on the powerplay, Sheahan (shorthanded) and Joey Dibiasi. Luke Karaim (powerplay) and Riley Jakobschuk notched goals in the third. Sheahan finished with a goal and two assists while Matt Lorito and Adam Maroney contributed two assists. St. Catharines was outshot 33-29. The Falcons edged the Stoney Creek Warriors 4-3 at Valley Park Arena. St. Catharines killed off seven penalties. After Stoney Creek opened the scoring, Sheahan fired two goals in 30 seconds. Torch and Cameron Youash both assisted on the two markers. Kilcar potted one to make it 3-1 at the end of the first on a play by Jakobschuk and Joey Saraccini. Stoney Creek made it 3-2 early in the second, but Torch added another power-play marker for what turned out to be the game-winner. Stoney Creek beat Sinclair early in the third. The Falcons sit one point ahead of the Warriors in the standings with a record of 16-4-2.
