Chris DeSousa was the bright spot last week in a disappointing two games for the Niagara IceDogs. The 5-foot-9 centre scored five goals in two games against Barrie and Peterborough but the Dogs lost both contest in overtime.
In his third season with the IceDogs, DeSousa has tallied 11 goals and 16 points in 21 games so far this season.
At home in a 3-2 loss to the Barrie Colts, DeSousa scored his first goal before the game was two minutes old.
He followed that up later in the period to put Niagara ahead 2-0, assisted by Andrew Merrett and Josh Day. Barrie responded on the powerplay to beat goaltender John Cullen in the second frame. Barrie tied it up with less than three minutes to play and in overtime, it was a Barrie rookie Colin Behenna who scored the winner. The Colts outshot Niagara 46-30 in front of 2,602 fans at Gatorade Garden City Complex's Jack Gatecliff Arena.
On Saturday night, the Peterborough Petes outlasted the IceDogs 5-4 in overtime before 2,870 spectators at home. The loss was Niagara's third overtime loss of the season.
DeSousa scored a hat trick and Andrew Merrett tallied a power play marker. Assists came courtesy of Matt Piva (2), Drew Schiestel, Marco Insam, Freddie Hamilton and Josh Day. Mark Visentin faced 21 shots. The IceDogs fired 48 shots on Peterborough.
DeSousa is now only second to Andrew Agozzino's 13. The Dogs sit with a record of 6-8-3-4.
