Badgers remain perfect after a pair of wins

The Brock University men's basketball team improved to a perfect 4-0 on the Ontario University Athletics regular season as they defeated the Queen's Gaels 74-65 in front of 584 fans Saturday night at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.

The Badgers outscored Queen's 20-4 in a six-minute span when Brock was down early in the fourth quarter.

Leading the Brock offence was the St. Catharines freshmen duo of Joel Whitty and Didi Mukendi, who both recorded 18 points. Whitty also handed out five assists, while knocking down a season-high five three-pointers.

Also in double figures was senior Owen White who contributed with 13 points.

Queen's Mitch Leger led all players with a game-high 25 points, including 3-for-5 shooting from beyond the arc. Brock's defence was able to keep Gaels' leading scorer Baris Ondul to just nine points on the night.

Brock shot 41.7 per cent from the field, including 10 three-pointers. The Gaels shot 45.6 per cent.

The Badgers continued to outrebound the opposition, winning the battle on the glass 38-28, which included 15 offensive boards.

The night before, the Badgers rolled past the Royal Military College Paladins 96-41 at home.

Midway through the first quarter, Brock led by just three. Brock then began to dominate the offence with a 20-3 run to take a 28-8 lead into the second quarter.

In the fourth, Brock received strong play off the bench on a 27-7 run over the final eight minutes. The Brock bench outscored RMC 51-4.

Brock had four players in double figures led by sophomore Joe Kendrick, who recorded 16 points including four three-pointers.

Sophomore Andrew Ferguson of St. Catharines was perfect from the field going 5-for-5, and 4-for-4 from beyond the arc to finish with a career high 14 points. Freshman Michaels Williams also added a career-high 14 points and seven rebounds. Mukendi added in 13 points and made five steals in the victory.

Brock shot 45.5 per cent from the field with 12 three-pointers. RMC finished with 30.0 per cent from the field.

The Badgers' young and athletic defence have also kept their OUA opponents to an average of just 55.0 points per contest. Brock pressured the Paladins to turn the ball over 27 times, leading to a 26-2 margin in points off turnovers.

The Badgers now travel to Ottawa to take on nationally ranked OUA East opponents, Carleton and Ottawa beginning on Nov. 21.
